New members over 55 years of age are always welcome at Pamela's Yoga Group at Broad Street Methodist Church, Ludlow
I first discovered yoga at evening classes in the Midlands in the seventies. The class met in a school drama studio with curtains and carpet which had a soft acoustic. We learnt classical postures and my favourite was the headstand which we did at the end of each class. That was followed by deep relaxation and I still remember the sense of calm bliss as I floated in serenity. This was truly restoring at the end of a busy day’s teaching. My next classes were in an old classroom with desks pushed back and bare boards, but the teacher, Roland Mason, took an interest in each student and gave gentle individual advice. I thank him for his beautiful teaching and helpful written handouts. He taught us about Patanjali’s sutras, and the Ascent of Mount Samadhi. His personal advice to me was to work on Pratyahara, the withdrawal of the senses, a discipline which is not so much mentioned these days, but increasingly important in a turbulent world where the media and commerce vie for our attention. It was not until 1991 that I was able to run my own yoga classes, but then we lived in a wonderful old schoolhouse with room for eight students in the old schoolroom. That was a beautiful space, with French windows opening to a garden, and many trees around. Sometimes I ran Yoga seminars on Saturdays. Moving to Nottingham I taught yoga in the YMCA. Also at the Women’s centre I gave lessons for voluntary contributions to the Yoga for Health and Education Trust to encourage women young and old to try yoga for the first time.
